High Definition Multimedia Interface (HMDI) is an
industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface that can
be used to connect an audio/video source, such as a
set-top box, DVD player or audio/video receiver to a digital television (DTV).
HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition
video. Using the same cable, it also supports the 8-channel digital
audio that is required for Home Theatre.
HDMI has the following advantages:
- Provides superior, uncompressed digital video and
audio quality
- Is an easy-to-use connector that replaces the maze of
cabling behind the entertainment center
- Is becoming a popular interface enabling the
transmission of high-definition content.
HDMI digital televisions can display video received from existing DVI-equipped
products, and DVI-equipped TVs will display video from HDMI sources.
